Hooper looking to incorporate breakdance style

Hello! I'm a hooper with ZERO breakdance experience. I'm trying to figure out a way to merge breakdancing and hooping. If you're not familiar with hooping, check out my page or the hooping videos tribe - lots of good stuff there. If you guys have any ideas, please let me know. If I can get some of the basic moves down, that would be a good start. Dancing with a hoop makes it a bit difficult to do some of the floor stuff, but I'm willing to try anything.
Going to my first breakdancing class tonight!!! So excited.

Ok, so I live in a not so with it city, and I've been breaking for a few months. Since there isn't anyone breaking in the club, (yes there's just one), I have to clear a space for myself if I decide I want to try to break in public. The only time I tried it, no one noticed, and someone stepped on me. How the dickens am I supposed to announce my intentions so it isn't akward and somewhat hazardus? Thanks in advance for your input,
Jen

Hey, i've taken a long break from bboying, and I find I need to get in shape fast so I took up breaking again. Im surprised to find that if you dont keep excersing balance, you'll loose it. How do most of you find balance? (being able to keep headstands, one hand stands etc....) Is it just building up muscles in every place you can, or having a body that has equally spread out weight?

Peace,

Dear friend,

I’m not exactly sure why I’m writing this letter, but something inside me compels me to do so. As you may know, I’ve been sponsoring a fantastic group of teens and young adults at Mt Vernon High School that call themselves the New Revolution break dance team. It’s been six years now and I’m amazed at how much time has passed since they first asked me to come watch them break. This group started from their interest in break dancing and the continuation of this art form that historically led to the non-violent resolutions between street gangs in the Bronx in the early 70’s. Sadly, this afternoon I was pulled aside and told that the group of about 45 members must disband and can no longer break dance in the halls of their school. This group is larger than some high school sports teams. In addition, I am no longer officially allowed to sponsor such a group in or near Mt Vernon High School.

As you can imagine, this was a liability driven decision on the part of the school. This was a result of administrators and lawyers in the Fairfax County Public School System deciding that this activity was not safe enough for their schools or their students. However, this group has been a support for hundreds of at-risk, gifted & talented, international baccalaureate, regular and special education students over the past several years. Just three hours ago, a breaker ran to my classroom before heading to his next class. And while catching his breath told me that he just got his grades up, and I’d be able to take his name off my academic probation list. Thus allowing him to come back to break dancing rehearsals and even perform in tomorrow’s pep rally. One hour ago, despite my pleas and fighting, I was told that not only will this student or his team mates not be able to perform in Friday’s pep rally, but there will no longer be a break dance team.

Just last year, these kids were told that they were the last break dancing group left in all of the Fairfax County public schools. This bittersweet news was due to the advocacy of the Student Activity office at Mt Vernon High School and the good will of other county level administrators. But this group of Mt Vernon HS, West Potomac HS, Hayfield Secondary, Edison HS, Lee HS, Mark Twain MS, Walt Whitman MS, and Riverside ES students and alumni knew that they had been given a time sensitive gift. They come together at the beginning of each year and fill my small classroom wall to wall, seated on the floor, tables, and some even standing out the door just to hear when the first day of practice will begin. And tomorrow afternoon will be the last day the break dancers will meet at Mt Vernon High.

I’ve been through a lot with this group. Everything from being told they could not become a group, writing their constitution, nominating them for honor societies, writing their college letters of recommendation, being a character witness for them in court and even attending their funerals. This group stood for more than just the art and history of break dancing. It stood for the part of their lives that wanted to stand up for the things that made them feel good about themselves, it was about overcoming the obstacles and oppression in their lives and the lives of their team mates. Even non-breakers would come to the break dance team not only to watch but to counsel their friends, the team and sometimes even get help with homework.

I guess I’m writing this letter in the minutes before leaving for my second job because I’m looking for the counsel from my friends. I realize that the problem of this group of students is not yours. But I do realize that the maladapted issues in our society make groups like this an important resource for the youth in our streets, homes, churches, jails, hospitals, centers and schools. Many of you know these issues well. I am interested in any and all data related to the youth of yesterday, today and tomorrow. I will be compiling all my educational, mental & physical health, behavioral, and disciplinary records on the kids in attempts to find information that would support how and why this particular activity is an important and worthwhile venture for advocates and institutions for youth.

Below is the latest official list of prohibited activities in Fairfax County Public Schools. This may be a losing battle in regards to keeping the group at Mt. Vernon, but the county should at least know what they are turning their backs on.

http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/fs/budget/riskmanagement/prohibited.htm

I’m not one to rock the boat unnecessarily, and I’m not one to simply point the finger and run. And so begins my search for answers and if you think you may have insight, no matter how insignificant you think it might be, there are a host of children and young adults who now know a different meaning of insignificance. And insignificant shouldn’t be the last word to describe the past six or thirty five years for the art form of break dancing. Call me, write me, text me, or even sit me down for coffee. I will listen. Thank you for reading and considering my words.

Peace.

This message is one of hope and encouragment for people living away from the major cities. Because many times when you are a breaker trying to stay fresh, keep your love of the dance going, or keep coming up with new moves, living away from the people who are into it is hard.

The major thing you need to do is just break every night, ALWAYS look for great music. (there are a bunch of dj's out there selling 1-2 albums for 5-20 dollars). Just download videos of people breakin on the internet, visit the cities as much as you can, but be sure you know where to connect first. And ofcourse, on the internet, check out tribes like this and join other bboy forums around the web. Peace people.
